Abstract: This work develops a two-dimensional unsteady finite analytic numerical solution (FANS) for the migration of groundwater contamination. The contaminant transport is described by the advection-diffusion-reaction equation. The unsteady FANS, providing a physically meaningful and stable numerical scheme, is shown to be accurate in simulating the contaminant transport emitting from a Gaussian-line contaminant source with radioactive decay. In the simulation, a very large time interval can be used. Therefore, only few time steps are needed to carry out the numerical simulation. The unsteady FANS using variable time-weighting factor is shown to be a better choice for avoiding numerical diffusions and oscillations than using the fully-implicit or the Crank-Nicholson schemes.
