Abstract: First-order second-moment reliability analysis is one of the most widely used and practical methods for the evaluation of risks and reliability of engineering systems. In carrying out the analysis, the performance variable Z has been defined in terms of loading L and resistance R variously as Z_1=R-L, Z_2= (R/L) -1, and Z_3=ln (R/L). It is shown here that for the advanced first-order method the result is not affected by the criterion in defining Z. But for the simpler mean-value first-order method, Z_1 gives better results than Z_3 while Z_2 is usually the worst.
