Abstract: The flow structure aroundl a cylindrical pier is studied for the flow where Reynolds number is over 10~8. The field measurement around AKASIKAIKYOU OHASHI bridge pier was carried out. The occurrence period of the shed vortex of the pier was about 30 second. In the rear side of the pier, large Karman vortices which has four time occurrence period as that of the shed vortex could be seen. From the period of Karman Vortices, the Strouhal number in the region of transcitical Reynolds number is found to be 0.21. The flow was also simulated numerically by the 3-dimensional flow analysis program, "Flow 3D". The result of the numerical simulation agreed with the measurement well.
