Abstract: Debris flows distribute widely in mountainous regions and cause serious disasters.InChina, since earlier 1950s,investigations and researches on debris flows had been carried onwith the development of the mountainous economic construction. After middle 1960s,locali-ty observations of debris flows have been carried on at the following areas, such as Jiangjiaravine,Hunshui ravine, and Laogan ravine(Yunnan province);Hesha river,Shantanravine, and Jiuzhai gully(Sichuan province),Guxiang ravine, and Jiamaqimei ravine(Tibet);Huoshao ravine,Liuwan ravine,Niwan ravine,Shanbeihou ravine, and Dahongravine(Ganshu province). The large amounts of data accumulation makes it possible to dosystematic research on debris flow process. Debris flow process is quite different from normal sedimented—flow process, with itsown characteristices in specific weight, grade composition, erosion and deposition to channelbed, and flowing patterns.Based on some field observation data in China, preliminary analy-ses on debris flow process had been carried out.
