Abstract: One of the central problems in the domain of hydraulics engineering concerns theCapacity of water to entrain and transport solid material. However, the estimationand control of sediment transport is not possible without an understanding of themechanisms causing incipient motion. For a long time this problem has been solvedconsidering only the mean parameters of the solid and the liquid phases, forexample by Shields[9],who linked incipient motion with the mean shear stress andmean grain diameter.Nevertheless, this Bpproach was not able to explain the greatscatter of experimental data as it does not provide an insight into the sedimententrainment mechanisms. For this purpose it is necessary to consider theinstantaneous forces acting on the particle.
