Abstract: Under the Lake Biwa Comprehensive Development Project, various facilitiesincluding lakeshore lev-ees,accompanying maintenance roads and inland drainage facilities are being constructed in order to pro-tect the area around the lakefrom flood damage. While these facilities are indispensable for the protectionof the precious lives and properties of the local residents, their construction inevitably resuts in thedestruction of parts of the reed communities. It was decided therefore that reed planting should be implemented at the waterside sites in the vicinityof the lakeshore levees deemed suitable for the growth of reedPreliminary experiments were carried outbetween 1978 and 1981,and experimental planting conducted between 1982 and 1986.Planted reed com-munities covering a total area of 5 ha have now been developed as a result of the work carried out between1982 and 1991.
