Abstract: The presented model is able to simulate the unsteady interaction of ground water and channel runoff in flat alluvial plains, where the ground water situation plays the major role of flood generation. A hydrodynamic model component of streamflow routing is coupled with a ground water model component. The model has been applied several times successfully to optimize flood protection m easures. Two examples of the Upper Rhine Valley in South West Germ any are presented.
