Abstract: Real data from three rural extremely arid catchments were used to identify the relationships between the quality and physical characteristics of rainwater and those of flash flood (stormwater) hydrographs. The catchments vary in size and vegetation cover whereas the rainwater are of different quality, depth, pattern, and spatial and temporal distributions over the catchment. Peak discharge and time to the peak are sensitive to the temporal distribution and pattern of rainwater more than to the spatial distribution and depth of rainwater. The catchments are the major source of ions and trace metals, whereas the rainwater is the main source of nutrients, in the stormwater. Mean concentration of constituents in stormwater increases with the increase in peak discharge and with the decrease in time to the peak discharge of hydrograph.
