Abstract: Reservoir built on rivers with high sediment load will face a contradiction between the preservation of storage capacity and deposition of sedim ent. An eventual filling of the reservoir is unavoidable if the water surface at the dam is constantly maintained at a relatively high level. However, such a contradiction can be resolved if a rational operation scheme of reservoir is adopted. A field case is introduced to show that a long-term main channel capacity can be kept under the scheme so called "I mpounding the Clean W ater and Releasing Turbid Flow" (ICRT) [N ing Chien and Ting Chung Tai, 1980]. D uring the flood seasons the sedim ent concentration is high, the reservoir is operated at full discharge capacity. In low-flow seasons when the sedim ent concentration is sm all, the water is stored for irrigation and power generation. The bottom outlets with sufficient carrying capacity and with locations at proper elevations must be provided for a main channel with long-term capacity on the operation scheme of ICRT.
