Abstract: The mar1 ime sector of the Danube, and especially the SulinaChannel outlet into the Black Sa,plays a most important part 8Ban European inner navigation waterway. From a hydraulic point of view, this area ie comparable to aatratified fluide ayetem, where meBBes of different densities pre-serve their individual character。Between these fluid masses, aseparation zone ie formed aB 8 surface of diecontinuity or of themaximum deneity and/or velocity gradient. The decrease of sediment transport capacity in the rivermouth area,88 well as the presence of a salt water wedge in thechannel, determine huge depoeits of solid mattere which graduallyreduce the water depth. In order to ensure optimal navigation con-ditiong,that is to maintain the required channel depth, variousmethods may be used:the increase of transport capacity throughchannel narrowing(the Hertley solution),jetties extention(atpresent, the overall jetty length is over 7 km),dredging opera-tions by means of classical systeme and 8o on,each with its ownadvantages and disadvantages.
