Abstract: Throughout the ages,man has built settlemente on river banke,and as the townshave grown,pressure has been brought to bear on the rivera.Whenever thesesettlements have been threatened by a rise in the water-level,flood-preventionachemes have been built;such echemes have reduced the natural channel of theriver,bringing about repercussions in the neighbouring areas.Although urbandevelopment has usually taken place along the length of the channels,it isgenerally in the estuaries where the problems are greatest,and it is here,at theriver mouth where solutions are moat complex.
