Abstract: In braided channels which often form in wide streams with a lot of sediment supply, sediment discharge varies spatially and temporally with the variation of channels. Results obtained from flume tests show that merging and diverging phases of channels occur repeatedly in space and time, . which bring about some changes of sediment discharge which deviates up and down from its mean value. Temporally averaged sediment rate is closely related to the transport capacity of a stream which forms in a merging phase of channel process. We propose a new method predicting the flow width in terms of a concept of the self-formed channel which is similar to the criterion of alternating bars formation.
