Abstract: A coarse surface layer forms in the outer-bank region, and a finer one in the inner-bank region in natural stream bends. This phenomenon results from a sorting of sraded sediment. A two-dimensional numerical simulation model is developed, which is useful for predicting the spatial and temporal variations of grain size distribution as well as of the bed elevation. Discussions are made on the sorting process and the effects of grain size distribution on the bed topography.
