Abstract: Direct measurements have been made of lift and drag forces act ing on 20.1 mm spherical particle placed within the riprapped side slope. Prelim inary experiments were conducted to establish the appropriate sphere diameter and its location at level of maximum wall shear. The laboratory results revealed that the lift and drag are random ly fluctuating around mean values and the ir d istribut ions were found to be approximately normal; and e ither of the lift and drag coefficient s, and the ratio of lift to drag, confirmed the correlation between these coefficients and the values of both the relative roughness parameter and the Reyno lds number. The forces acting on four different shaped non-spherical particles were also acquired and the results were dependent on the particle shape and orientation.
