Abstract: It has always been recognised that open channel -free surface -flow is complicated andhydraulic engineers are accustomed to approaching design and maintenance problems in this areausing an assortment of methods based largely on empiricism. Recent detailed examination of uniform channel flow has revealed the complexity inherent in thevelocity distribution in the cross-section and from this was inferred a multi-cel secondarycirculation pattern. Also laboratory studies of meandering channels, with and without overbankflow, have been carried out in an attempt to extend our understanding of open channel flow toboundary conditions which more closely resemble actual rivers.
