Abstract: Strong bathymetric changes constitute a very common hydraulic irregularity. It is shown, through a series of case studies, that depth-integrated two-dimensional modelling can in general, absorb these changes without generating spurious responses of the eystem. Adaptations must be introduced in some special situations. Consequently, 2D mode lling becomes an alternative to one-dimensional analysis in problems where 1D mode lling forces the flow description in an arbitrary manner.
