Abstract: Scour characteristics of channel bed below low head hydraulic structures were investigated for the overflow with free fail nappe. satisfactory explanation was arrived at through the application of plunging jet theory in conjunction with the detachment and motion stage of a sediment particle to the scour process. The max-imum scour depth was found closely related to the sediment number which is defined as the ratio of tractive force to resistance. Bx-periments were conducted to verify the theories. The results were positive.
