Abstract: The report presents the analysis of traditional methods of calculating statically and dyn amically stable sandy beds. The conception is suggested to estimate sandy beds deformations, and not their stability. On the basis of experim ntal investigations and data obtained in nature, a criterial relationship is proposed to fulfil this estimation. The relation ship includes initial hydraulic conditions, morphometric characteristics of the bed and parameters of the soil making up the bed. The values of sandy beds deformation degree were calculated by stability criteria proposed by different researchers and by the dimensionless complex suggested by the authors. The results were compared with experimental and nature data, which has clearly shown that preference should be given to the complex sugg ested by the authors.
