Abstract: A city built on a river floodplain will be flooded if protective works fail to contain a flood in that river. A case study involving levee breaches or overtopping is discussed, and a computer based technique is presented for assessing the effects of partial blockage of bridge waterways by debris. The practicalities of computer modelling of transient over irregular urban terrain are then discussed, with illustrations of the relative strengths of channel network models and storage cell models. Visualisation of model results is noted as an underdeveloped field and initial research findings are presented.
