Abstract: Model tests to describe the flow field in final settling tanks are presented. In terms of jet characteristics and density current phenom ena, the m axim um velocity and the height of the bottom current are approached and their dependence on the density difference and inlet boundary conditions are explained. A Gauss' schen profile is shown to represent the vertical velocity distribution. The results serve to analyse the efficiency of conventional tank geometries with regard to short circuiting.
