Abstract: Kanpur city is situated on the right bank of the river Ganga. The industrial and drinking water requirement of the city is met essentially from the river Ganga. The river Ganga was flowing along Kanpur bank for years together and many ghats have also been constructed along the right bank in the past. The pump house and thermal power station were established on the right bank as far back as 1921-23 since the river channel was hugging the right bank. Subsequently in 1950, the river moved its course in this reach and started shifting towards the left bank making water scarce along the right side. In order to divert the required quantity of water (16 cumecs) towards the right bank, different means were considered taking into account the sediment transport characteristics of the river. Dredging a pilot channel was one of the cheapest alternatives tried for the purpose. Different alignments of the pilot channel were tested on mathematical and physical models and the optimum alignment was recommended for implementation.
