Abstract: A simple model to evaluate shear stresses in the interface of two fluids is presented. The expression of the interface shear stress resulting of this model is very easy to handle and to apply. Water waves that propagate over a non-rig id bed attenuate as a result of energy dissipation within the bed. As a consequence of this kind of bed also, the shear stresses on the bed surface exerted by waves can differ significantly from those got by applying fix bed theory. From the basis of small amplitude wave theory, the coupled interaction between the bed, which responds in both an elasttic and a viscous manner, and an overlying water wave boundary layer is analy zed. Depending on the elasticity and viscosity of the bed, the interface shear stress can vary between zero and one times the value got by considering water wave boundary layer over a fix bed.
