Abstract: Large abnormal oscillations with periods of 10 to 60min sometimes occur in some Japanese large harbors like Nagasaki-Port in Kyusyu-island and Sendai-Port in Tohoku-district. These harbors are. characterized by a narrow entrance and long channel. A numerical simulation method for investigating the amplification factors and modes of oscillation is developed and validated with field data. The results derived from the numerical simulation and field observation show that seiche on a continental shelf or on a large bay outside the harbor induces a remarkable harbor oscillation.
