Abstract: The length and time scales of lake cireulation can vary greately e.g.from small ripples on the surface ofsmall bonds to large waves and complex current systems in large basins. In the last three decades,con-siderable advances have been made in the understanding of the large scale circulation systems in lakesas aresult of the need to predict the dispersion of chemical and biological discharges.Several analyticaland numerical models have been developed aiming for the simulation of lake cireulation, perticularlythose driven by wind shear stres at the water surface and those caused by partial heating/cooling inboth vertical and horizontal directions(i.e,stratification and density currents). In general the modelsiffer greatly in the emphasis given to the dynamie features of the general boundary-value problem(see e.g.Csanady(1968),Liggett and Hadjitheodoro(1969),Witten and Thomas(1976)andMohammed-Zaki(1976),(1980)).
