Abstract: A semi-tidal river impoundment has been designed for the River Lagan in N. Ireland with the aid of hydraulic model studies. Pond levels will be controlled by means of a gated weir structure which will be able to exclude surge tides. When there is adequate freshwater inflow from the river into the pond, water quality in the pond will be maintained by the partial tidal flushing. During periods of low river flow, density stratification will occur in the pond, hindering tidal flushing which could lead to severe oxygen sag within the impounded water. In these periods, a low level withdrawal system combined with a gate operation strategy will be used to prevent the development of water quality problems.
