Abstract: Assessment of siltation due to suspended sediment load is very important for ports and this requires proper assessment of sediment and salinity concentrations. Considerable variation and scatter is noticed in these parameters and due to high cost involved in collecting the data it is necessary to establish the optimum data needs by considering actual data and statistical analysis. In the present paper based on the statistical analysis of extensive data of Mormugao Port, it has been found that considerable improvement in predictions can be achieved with cumulative data of 3 years compared to individual years, both for sediment and salinity concentrations. It was also found that the normalised confidence intervals for the salinity were better compared to sediment concentration. Findings from these studies will be useful for planning data collection programmes for Mormugao Port and other port development in the region but studies at other ports will be necessary for more generalisation.
