Abstract: Corrugated and wavy surfaces are widely used in heat exchanger devices in order to enhanceheat transfer.Even though in the past many works were devoted to the study of flow and heattranser in channels with wavy surfaces or roughness elements in oder to quantify the heat transfermodifications with respect to the plane wall case and to provide general criteria for design, theresults obtained are somewhat puzzling. In fact, both increases(Asako &Faghri(1987)of heattransfer and decreases(Sunden&Trollheden(1989))have been found depending on the geometryof the surfaces and on the values of the other parameters of the problem. No precise criterion toobtain more efficient heat exchanger surfaces has been found and nowadays the design is somewhatempirical.
