Abstract: The Paper describes a theoretical investigation of the slow moving interior flow within a large scale gyre in a stratified service reservoir. In such a reservoir, if a tangential inlet jet is located in the upper layer and discharges into that layer, then the interface will usually prevent the transfer of momentum to the lower layer. when the motion of the flow is small enough, the upper layer circulates over the lower layer without mixing. The Paper shows that for a horizontal interface, the motion of the upper layer is verysimilar to that of a fluid rotating near a solid stationary disc (Boedewadt flow). The surface of separation, however, rotates like a disc in a stationary fluid (von Karman flow). The Paper shows that rotation of the upper layer might produce a suction pressure over the lower layer.
