Abstract: The suitability of latoratory experiments for determining quantita-tive laws of transport across a density interface is examined with a view to identify dependable inputs to refined models of complex stratified flows. Exper i mental limitations are outlined and grouped into three main categories, i. e. geometrical limitations, molecular effects and incomplete represent ation of physical phenomena. Means are suggested for reduct ion of undesirable effects and improved reliability of projections to natural flows.
