Abstract: The Salto Grande Hydroelectric Plant,Iocated on the Uruguay River,is a binationa1 Argentinean-Uruguayan hydroelectric plant which has14 Kaplan turbines with a 135 Mw nominai load per machine.Whenthese machines are working with loads which are def initely smallerthan the nominal load, strong mechanical vibrations are produced inthe machines at times together with intensive noises. In this pa-per we wil1 put forth_a hydrodynamic characterization of the causeof these phenomena。Our characterization is based upon:a.mea-surements which were taken at the hydroelectric plant;b.laborato-ry exper iments, and c.a review of the specialized bibliography onthis sub ject matter.
