Abstract: In design practice the air demand of free flow downstream of a high head gate is determined by empirical formulae. Prototype data however show, that the computations can only be considered as rough estimates. Extended prototype measurements in the air supply system and in the free flow tailrace tunnel of a high head bottom outlet, located in the Swiss Alps, are presented. The air demand as well as the air and water pressures are discussed and then compared to predictions. The influence of various parameters, besides the efflux Froude-number, is pointed out.
