Abstract: A procedure to determine friction factor in open-channels from backwater curves and discharge measures is presented. A minimization process from an initial objective function by means of a Gauss-Newton procedure is carried out. Darcy-Weisbach and Manning coefficients were obtained and confidence tests for the results were made. Manning results showed a better confidence than Darcy-Weisbach because of the smooth turbulent flow, near the transition zone, developed in flume. Field test application to hydroelectric canal showed good results.
