Abstract: The surge flow irrigation method is a new technique that increases the on-farm water use efficiency. It is arguably the most important improvement in gravity irrigation systems in centuries. Nevertheless, an intermittent flow discharge device i s needed for surge application. . Several different electronic valves, which produce the intermittence are currently available. As we show in this paper, these sophisticated valves represents only one option, but some others more simple-and less expensive in cost and energy consumption-are possible. In this paper, a very simple device, that produces a predictable intermittent flow di scharge is presented. The device takes advantage of fluidic laws, making unnecessary the use of moving control elements or external energy sources. The operating principles of the device are described, general design equations obtained, and laboratory results are presented.
