Abstract: The flow structure in the outer reg ion of open channel flows is studied by means of flow visualization experiments ana velocity measurements. The structure can be thought as formed by large streamwise vortices scaling witli the flow depth. Associated to the upwelling motion induced by these vortices, eddies with a vertical axis are detected on the free surface. With regards to the velocity measurements, analysis of the data indicates that the effect of the bursts occurring near the wall does not reach the free surface for high Reynolds number open-channel flows.
