Abstract: In a paper by Bedford et al.(1987b)an acoustic profiling system wasused to measure, for the first time, entrainment and corresponding netfluxes. These were measured at a site in Central Long Island Sound in 20m oftide-affected waters. The instruments were attached to one leg of F.Bohlen's(U.of Connecticut,Avery Point,Connecticut USA)Daisy tower(Bohlen,1982)and two deployments were performed during August 12-15,1985.The profiledata, collected in the bottom 1m by the 3MHz profiling system, allowed anexceptionally dense profile of sediment concentration to be sampled andtemporally averaged into 15 minute boundary layer profiles. In analyzingthese boundary layer profiles by pattern analysis procedures(Bedford et al.1987a)three simple linear regressions were examined and it was observed thatthe most suitable functional profile form as measured by the correlationcoefficient varied with time through the deployment and tidal cycle.
