Abstract: A numerical model has been developed and used to predict mud mass transport rate in mud layer under the effect of water surface waves. In the model, the water layer is modeled as viscous fluid and the mud layer is modeled as visco-elastic fluid. The vertical distributions of Lagrangean component and Eulerian component of mud mass transport rate was calculated separately by using velocity field obtained by the model. A series of laboratory experi-ment has been performed by using a wave flume. Kaolinite mud was used as bed material. The purpose of the experiment was to measure transport rate and to compare laboratory results with model results. Small tracers were inserted into mud layer, and from the movement of tracers mud transport rate was obtained. The model results and the laboratory results show good agreement. It was concluded that the present numerical model based on the assumpution of visco-elastic mud layer is useful to predict mud mass transport rate due to wave action.
