Abstract: This review identifies the requirements placed upon river engineers and theengineering works which have been developed to satisfy these requirements. These works invo1ve a perturbation from the status quo and the morpho1ogicalproblems associated with each type of construction are reviewed. There thenfollows a description of river processes and characteristics and an indicationof how the understanding of these processes can be used to predict the effectsof engineering works.
