Abstract: Profiles of laboratory scale bentonite mud flows from simulated dambreak experimentswere recorded on high speed photographs at quarter-second intervals. The scaled photographsprovided tip and surface velocities as well as successive mud surface profiles. Rheologicalmeasurements on samples of mud that were carried out promptly after the flume experimentswere used to establish a momentum transport relationship for bentonite mud and variation ofits yield stress and viscosity with concentration of solid particles. A one-dimensionalnumerical model that was modified to incorporate constitutive relations emerging fromrheological measurements, simulated the laboratory flows.
