Simulation of a Severe Case of Pollution of the Rhine River

Abstract: A considerable amount of chemicals, among them the insecticidedisulfoton, was spilled into the Rhine river during a fire near Base1, Switzerland, leading to severe po11ution of the river. A model fordescribing the transport of soluble compounds in rivers was calibratedwith Rhine hydraulic characteristics and used to analyze the behaviourof disulfoton on its way to the North Sea.
