Abstract: The basic principles of physical modelling, i. e. the use of scaled down representations of hydraulic situations, are reviewed. The detailed papers and contributions that follow cover some of those aspects of physical modelling that remain contentious but there are many outstanding questions. It is only possible in this review to cover selected topics.
