Abstract: Recirculating flows behind a sudden expansion in a shallow open chan-nel were investigated for the effect of bed-friction. A bed-friction number was introduced. In the limit of shallow water depth, the results obtained from the experiments and the numerical computation follow asymptotic relationships that are quite independent of the horizontal length scale of the channel expansion.
