Abstract: Analytical and numerical tests have been used to determine the range of application of various forms of the Boussinesq equations. Results are compared against linear, cnoidal and high order stream function solutions. A preferred set of equations has been found to provide reliable results beyond the normal range of shallow water wave theory.
