Abstract: This paper examines the ill-posedness of the inverse problem of parameter identification. It reviews the methods which have been developed in coping with ill-posedness, which is generally characterized by the instability and non-uniqueness of the identified parameters. The issue of identifiability which is intimately related to uniqueness is also discussed.
