Abstract: Physical and numerical experiments have been undertaken to investigate the behaviour of an hydraulic jump as it translates along a channel durin g the propagation of a hydro graph. Physical experiments showed that the effect of the translating motion should be considered when quantifying the movement of a flood wave through a steep channel; significant amounts of hydro graph attenuation were observed. Numerical experiments showed the diffusion wave ap proximation to be the most reliable method of predicting the propagation of hydraulic jumps.
