Abstract: Pollutants di scharged into a river are transported and mixed due to di fferent mechanisms. The most important is the advection and dispersion. Their role in open chan- nel flow is explained. Two methods of a calculation of the dispersion coefficient are discribed and a function which characterizes a pollutlon spreading in rivers is intro- duced.
