Abstract: Hybrid numerical schemes for computing one-dimensional contaminant tr ansport using the Holly-Preissm ann characteristics method for linear advection, and Crank -Nicholson finite-difference operators for diffusion, are presented and analyzed. These schemes have been extended to problems of nonlinear advection (Burger's equation) with limited success. Several problems remain to be resolved before the hybrid approach can be used to compute surge formation in channels in the context of the full de St. Venant equations.
