Abstract: An optimal control model has been. developed and combined with a numerical transport model of a one-dimensional estuary to simulate the impact of discharges of waste heat or waste water on the estuary and to maximize the discharge for a given set of constraints. The influence of var ious par ameters (constraints, dispersion, time-dependent boundary conditions) on the optimal discharge function has been investigated.
