Abstract: It is often required to dispose of sediment say from dredging into natural water bodies in such a way that there will not be any undesirable effects in the surrounding area. To assess the effect of such disposals laboratory investigations were undertaken on a model basin built to a geometrically similar scale of 1/20 as well as on a tidal model built to scales of 1/ 700 horizontal and 1/120 vertical, simulating the sediment discharge using brine solution and silt brought from a particular site. The result of experiments indicated that the spread of the sediment-jet at the bed is dependent on the height of the discharge point above the bed. Tidal model results indicated that dispersion of sediment takes place over the entire water depth due to turbulent mixing.
