Abstract: Water consumption at locks is a major part in the water budget of an artificial waterway. Water losses due to leakage at lock gates and/or valves can be significant for aging structures. These losses need to be estimated, for both global water resources planning, and local maintenance works scheduling. The location of such leaks makes it difficult for direct discharge measurement. An indirect measurement method has therefore been developed and tested. This method is based on volumetric recording in the lock chamber itself. Several field tests demonstrated the validity of this approach and highlighted his advantages and weaknesses.
