Abstract: Multi-parameter radar at X-band wavelength (MP-X radar) has high potential for early warning of disasters relating to heavy rainfall due to its high temporal and spatial resolutions. Moreover, the quantitative analysis of 2D and 3D unprecedented torrential and convective rainfall estimates by MP-X radar is also very important to analyze for further studies and practices. Therefore, comprehensive quantitative and qualitative examination is explored to enhance the efficacy and adequacy of MP-X band radar rainfall. This study focuses on the two heavy rain events which happened in western Japan during August2013 and 2014. Through these analyses, 2D MP-X band radar rainfall shows fair agreement in 2013 event in the presence of very severe signal extinction area as well as the limited far range detection due to the feature of radar beam spreading. On the other hand X-band radar provides better results than operational C-band radar both in time sequences and intensity for the localized heavy rainfall in 2014. From 3D gridded rain results, the specific rain structure can be well captured, the development and enhancement of rain band is fully understood as well as the maximum cloud height can be known even though some issues with tiny discontinuity in 3D grid cells. It is also indicated that the 3D X-band radar data will be useful for data assimilation with Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model for high accuracy Quantitative Precipitation Forecasting (QPF) .
